Saying that presidents have to be able to handle more than one thing at once, Democrat Barack Obama this afternoon declined Republican presidential opponent John McCain’s call to suspend his campaign in tandem with McCain over the country’s financial crisis.
There are those who cynically view McCain’s move as a public relations stunt. Joan Walsh, editor of Salon, took the news of McCain suspending his campaign at face value as being politically motivated; she has questioned the wisdom of such a move on a tactical level.
It would appear that if the unexpected suspension by McCain were politically motivated, the intended result would be to paint the Arizona senator in a time when his polls are trending downward as a man of action and a patriot willing to put partisanship aside in a time of crisis.
Surely Fox News on the right will have much venom for the Obama campaign for not following McCain’s lead.
It remains to be seen how the divergent chess moves by McCain and Obama will play with the 18 percent of voters undecided in the middle.
Also in doubt, of course, is the scheduled premiere presidential debate slated for 9 p.m. Friday.
