As dramatic as the move is, its scale seems timid compared to the state’s task of repairing the Detroit Public School’s budget hold. DPS has a deficit of $200 million, which is also being tackled by a state-appointed financial manager.
For some perspective, the Detroit schools’ deficit is 28 times larger than Pontiac’s deficit. Furthermore, Pontiac’s entire budget for 2008-09 is just a quarter of the size of the DPS’ deficit.
