Eastern Michigan University is being sued by a conservative legal group for allegedly dismissing a graduate student because of her views on homosexuality. According to The Ann Arbor News, the Alliance Defense Fund Center is suing EMU in Detroit’s U.S. District Court because it dismissed Julia Ward from the counseling graduate program after Ward referred a gay client to another counselor because she believes homosexuality is “immoral sexual conduct, and cannot affirm or validate that behavior or otherwise use her counseling skills and abilities to facilitate homosexual behavior, without violating her sincere religious beliefs,” the lawsuit said.
The suit alleges EMU’s dismissal of Ward is violates her civil rights because it is tantamount to discriminating against Ward on the basis of religion.
A letter sent to Ward by the Ypsilanti university said she violated the American Counseling Association’s code of conduct that prohibits counselors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation.
Ward’s attorneys want the district court to issue an injunction to have her reinstated in the program and want compensatory damages.
