Alaska's gubernatorial candidates outlined their campaign themes in Ketchikan on Wednesday, avoiding negative personal attacks while highlighting their positions on issues of state, regional and local

    By SCOTT BOWLEN

    Daily News Staff Writer

    ………………
She voiced support for the proposed Gravina Island bridge.

“The money that's been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done,” Palin said. “This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper.”

Palin said Ketchikan had taken a lot of heat for the “bridge to nowhere” proposal. She said she can relate, referencing the remark made by a “high-profile politician” (Sen. Ben Stevens) describing Mat-Su residents as “Valley trash.”

“OK, you've got Valley trash standing here in the middle of nowhere,” Palin said. “I think we're going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project.”

Eartha, just want you to know how much I appreciate you on your coverage of medical marijuana. I am a 42 year old lups patient and have been on so many pain killers I just refuse to take them anymore. The damage the pharmacuticals do to your other organs is just criminal. God gave us this plant for many reasons. Not only does it detoxify the body, it drastically lowers cholesterol and dialates blood vessles. In Canada, they use marijuana specifically for dialiating the blood to cure diabetic blindness, being the eyes are the smalles vessels we have in our bodies they again begin to see. Please go to meijers and buy Efagold Hemp powder in the vitamin section and see all of the vitamins, minerals, amino acids and all of the Omega's it has in it. PLEASE KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND EDUCATE THE PEOPLE TO THE HEALTH BENEFITS. Thank you Eartha!

Those of us who are in the know, know that we need a mayoral candidate that supports DPS. Charter schools add to the furthur destruction of DPS. Yes, as a teacher in the system, many things need an overhaul but no one is willing to admit two things. One, our schools are only as good as the families that send their children- too many kids are sent to schools unprepared and undisciplined. Two, the mismanagement of funds and corruption that has gone on for years has nothing to do with the principals or teachers. Finally, only a wise mayoral candidate would know that trying to get the city of Detroit back on track doesn't need to take over the school system too. Running the city is enough of a task within itself. Candidates who want to control the city and the school system simply want more power.

We have a budgetary problem in Michigan, but this is just the beginning.
We the people, who elected you, are living on declining salaries, but government employees are receiving raises like nothing happened in this economic mess. I just don’t understand why you won’t influence lawmakers to clean this budgetary mess.
From my personal experience, which required obtaining legal documents from the county court, I witnessed that the traffic in the court buildings was almost non-existent. Based on the information I obtained from people working in the court, they told me that the court is busy only on Wednesday from 9 AM till noon.
Therefore, to improve the budgetary problem for Michigan, I strongly suggest reducing the personnel working for the judicial system.
Other actions that should be taken are:
    1. Reduce the number of judges and staff
    2. Reduce salaries for the judges, at least by 40%
    3. Reduce salaries across the board for all state county employees by 20%
    4. Reduce the Supreme Court judges from Lansing Michigan from 7 to 5, including reduction of the salaries of remaining judges by 40%
    5. Eliminate matching funds for retirement of State employees

I just do not understand why you never question the excessive salaries of the judicial system.
I just don’t understand why you don’t question the special privileges of retiring state employees
I just don’t understand why you are passing laws to protect the state employee’s retirement from garnishment, but not for the rest of the people.

I personaly don’t like budgetary cuts from schools and health care for the people.
Who pay, for this mess and preserves the master race – the judicial system and the state employees?.

Why is the system so corrupted?

I will appreciate your answer to at least one question.

I believe most of you are living in denial and believe that the economy will change soon. I hope so, but this
    won’t happen.

Therefore, start reducing as a first step, the judicial system, because we are refusing to support the master race.

    Regards
    John

First ley it be known that I'am a smoker and Im sick and tired of the govenor along with our elected officals targeting us smokers to pick up needed tax revenue. What I would like to know are the name of these elected offical so that these people can be made publc so we can be made aware is against us and making us feel like secon class citizens,

First, let it be known that I am a non-smoker and I'm sick and tired of the way tobacco addicts demand that they be allowed to fill public areas with a messy and dangerous toxin. As a dancer, I have never appreciated having to weigh the enjoyment of a good club and great music against the prospect of the smoke hangover the next day, not to mention having to wash the tar and other smoke toxins out of my clothes before I can put them away.
It is a shame that we cannot retroactively charge the smokers of the last century for the increases in cancer, asthma and other breathing ailments .
That having been said, I think we should also be on the alert as citizens for making smokers taxees of convenience, instead of facing the fact that those of us above the poverty line can afford to give back a bit more of the bounty this state has given us.

Just read your stories and blogs on Fenner Arboretum sex sting by the Lansing Police Department. As a concerned citizen and a retired civilian employee of LPD, I'd like to voice my perspective regarding the undercover operation and the request from Police Commissioner Jan Kolp to address possible sexual activity at the Arboretum. Commissioner Kolp is a friend, but most importantly, she is a citizen of Lansing and has a right and responsibility to report any probable illegal activities taking place in her neighborhood to the authorities. Fenner Arboretum is a public facility and is frequented by school children on field trips, families and the general public. Any indecent exposure, sexual activity, etc. taking place on Arboretum's grounds, whether heterosexual or homosexual, is strictly illegal and should not be tolerated by the community. Lt. Larry Klaus, also a friend, is a dedicated and decorated police officer with many years of service to the Lansing community. I know him to be honest, unbiased and loyal to the citizenry. I trust his judgment that an undercover operation was necessary, since uniformed officers cannot police the Arboretum 24/7. I believe LPD puts the highest priority on the safety and well being of all Lansing citizens and am proud to be associated with them. My hope is that the gay community take a step back and look at the issue of any sexual activity in public places as inappropriate and actively support the police for taking action.

    Eartha,

    I did a little research on biomass power. It doesn't appear safe to me. Here's what I found;

According to the Massachusetts Energy Alliance (http://www.massenvironmentalenergy.org), biomass energy production produces the same amount of particulate as coal and 50% more carbon dioxide & carbon monoxide. Biomass carbon dioxide emissions are not regulated by HR 2454. It would take more than 25 years before a logged forest could sequester near the amount of carbon removed, likely many more years. Biomass power would not be carbon neutral for a long time and certainly not when we need it most.

According to Patricia Thornley, University of Manchester 70% of particulate pollution from a Biomass plant is generated by the diesel equipment that harvests & processes the material. If true, biomass gasification wouldn’t reduce particulate pollution much relative to conventional burning.

For every 10 micrograms per cubic meter increase of fine particulate there will be a 4% increase in deaths by any cause, 6% increase in Cardiopulmonary deaths and 8% increase in lung cancer deaths per Pope et al study published in JAMA http://www.healtheffects.org/ (see study 140)

In my estimation our area currently has a particulate pollution level of about 15 micrograms per cubic meter based on history and nearby monitoring information from the nearest current monitoring stations in Escanaba & Muskegon. Unfortunately we don’t really know as there is no local air quality monitoring station.

    So if a local biomass plant added 10 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate to Grand Traverse county air we could calculate the corresponding added mortality;

The following example is based on 1997 deaths of women in GT county (more current data could be used but this is what I found for example purposes)

    195 – heart disease x .06 = 11.7
    58 – lung cancer x .08 = 4.6
    151 – all other x .04 = 6

total = 22 added female annual deaths per 10 micrograms per cubic meter added particulate.
Some studies suggest a slightly smaller death rate for men.

There would also be additional hospital admissions, childhood asthma, & lower quality of life for many. This direct relationship to health effects & particulate has been verified in many studies starting with the Harvard six city study beginning in 1976. This direct relationship to particulate pollution holds for coal, wood & diesel particulate. There is no safe level of particulate pollution. Health effects are measured at very low levels.

I would like to see us use this opportunity to engineer combustion out of our energy needs as much as possible.

My name is Bob Icard and I am the National Business Development Manager of MFI-Miami here in Traverse City.

MFI-Miami is an independent compliance examination firm specializing in the identification of mortgage fraud, compliance violations and deceptive, abusive and predatory lending practices. We search for violations of MCL 445.1634, 445.1636 and 445.1637. At MFI-Miami, we go even further by investigating the securitization process including the loan pooling and servicing agreements and the security certificate itself.

Several states recognize MFI-Miami as an expert in mortgage compliance. MFI-Miami is nationally recognized as the leader in mortgage fraud investigations. Let me introduce you to another fine example of christian stewardship: fracking.

Hydraulic fracturing is used to harvest natural gas. A water/chemical solution is pumped into shale formations at high pressure shattering the rock structures, freeing the gas to be pumped back to the surface. Recently companies like Encana Corporation, which has leased 250,000 acres of State & private land in Michigan, have found that by drilling much deeper vertically and then drilling several thousand additional feet horizontally while using far more chemicals and water, they can unleash gas that previously was not harvestable. Michigan's Collingwood shale formation, which lies over two miles below the surface, is now on their radar. Last winter Encana drilled their first test wells near Lake City.

This new technique has been linked to the contamination of wells and underground aquifers in Michigan & other States. Residents of Dimock, Pennslyvania had their aquifer contaminated by Cabot Oil & Gas company. Now residents have to use bottled water or expensive reverse osmosis & carbon filters on their taps. Encana leaked benzene into West Divide Creek in Colorado & was fined $371,000 for their actions. The company is making so much money they write fines off as a cost of doing business. New York State has wisely imposed a moratorium on fracking until State officials can examine the process. Since there is an auction of an additional 452,000 acres of State land scheduled for the end of October, Michigan should quickly do likewise.

One huge issue is that companies are not required to disclose what chemicals they use. This leaves the general public & landowners who lease their land ignorant of potential problems while hampering State & Federal officials in case of an emergency. Our State Representatives should immediately introduce a bill requiring full disclosure before wells can be drilled in Michigan. I remind you that we have no technology that can purify a contaminated underground reservoir. A technological problem for which there is no solution is a technology that should not be used. I hope hunter's and fishermen in this State will contact their elected officials and oppose fracking. While people can use bottled water or filters, the deer & turkey & trout have no such options.

Destroying common resources that all beings depend on is the ancient definition of terrorism. In pre-christian Europe, anyone guilty of poisoning a well or spring was killed. Maybe we need to make corporate CEO's personally responsible for company actions and employ the old penalty. The Christians mouth the word life, but they destroy the very substance life is based on: water. It is time we rejected the perverse morality of Jesus Christ that is destroying the Earth.

Eartha, enjoyed your report on the private GEO prison in Lake County. The traditional media in the state wave blasted the news (all based on an AP article) and focused almost solely on the issue of job creation. You are the first to raise other issues. Lake County, one of the poorest in the state, certainly can use the economic benefit, but there are security issues. The county police force consists of 12 personal in the sheriff’s department and two state troopers. There is no state police post in the county. There is only one prosecutor in the county, no asistants. Who will respond to problems at the prison, assaults, escape, riot? What does “mid-level” prisoners mean? Level II and III under the California code or does this mean we will have Level IV inmates? A host of issues remain unexplored by the traditional media.

Eartha, I enjoyed your article on the private Geo prison in Lake County slated to receive “mid-level” inmates from California. The traditional media in the state blast wave reported this story (all based upon a single AP article) and focused solely upon the creation of jobs. You raised the issues of low paid, minimally trained private corrections officers. Lake County, one of the poorest in the state, certainly can use any economic benefit. As a poor county it has limited law enforcement resources, 12 deputy sheriffs and no State Police Post. Court resources are also limited, just the elected prosecutor. How are issues at the facility to be dealt with, assualts, escapes, even riot? What does “mid-level” inmate mean, Level II and III under the California code or also Level IV?

    REINSTATE DON’T ASK DON’T TELL

Now, for the so-called Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal.
Once enacted early next year homosexuals will now be able to serve openly in the US armed forces. The US Military will now officially recognize homosexuality as a legitimate lifestyle and those soldiers who object can simply lay down their arms thank you very much. This was a societal seismic shift. The military was the last major public institution that had been able to resist to tidal wave the juggernaut that the gay rights movement is.
It was a moral earthquake. Here’s why. The issue has never really been about whether gays can shoot a gun or drop bombs from a plane or, combat effectiveness, or troop morale or any of those things.
The real issue has been the advancement of the evil of homosexuality it’s the one argument that you never heard made about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
No doubt it was just below the radar for some more insightful folks but that discussion was never allowed to happen because we can’t talk about morality and evil and right and wrong.
TV newscasters can’t say that. Generals can’t say that. Soldiers can’t say that. Politicians can’t say that.
Ah. But Christian Clergy can and they didn’t. Nowhere will you find the all out effort on the part of the Clergy to attack this moral evil.
Where is the conference call with other bishops trying to galvanize Catholic voters to call their Congressmen and urge them to vote against legitimizing homosexuality in the military?
Where are the long public speeches about the moral corruption that will now surly take place as military superiors will now have to indoctrinate new young recruits that this “lifestyle” is acceptable?
Where are the letters to the editors in all the local papers decrying the political manipulation of the armed forces to advance an intrinsic moral evil?
Where are the press releases warning how this further legitimization of evil will continue the moral morass into which the once great America has sunk?
How can the bishops push out their puny attempts to celebrate natural marriage when they stand by essentially silent as the last societal institution that can speak about moral choices with a straight face succumbs to the evil?
The continuing lack of boldness on the part of the Clergy taken collectively to resist evil in all its forms is a deep sadness for faithful Christians.
How can they ever be expected to be taken seriously when they stand up and clamor for social justice and human rights on the one hand, and then take a pass on standing up against direct evil on the other?
Standing up to the non-stop proliferation of homosexuality as a legitimate good is definitely worth fighting against!
Yet, once again, when the chips are down and the moment comes to stand for Christ and the truth and teachings of the Church – what did they all do? Just like the Apostles in the garden of Gethsemane – They all fled.
But here’s the difference. When the Apostles took off they had not yet received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. These men today have the fullness of orders and yet, too may of them are cowards.
They are like Neville Chamberlains who continue to give in and appease and refuse to take a solid stand. And all the while talking like things are going well.
And they wonder why they have to resort to marketing campaigns to get people to listen to them and give them money.
They are dithering away whatever moral capital they once had to speak boldly in the public square if in fact they have any at all.
Next time a big moral issue comes up it would probably be best if they just sat on the sidelines like they did with this one until they realize WHO it is they are supposed to be defending.

This is how the Emergency Financial Managers like Robert Bobb work. Quickly and without mercy. He seems to have been given complete power over Detroit’s schools, even though a judge say he could not control academics.

He has said that this school for pregnant and parenting teens must be closed and turned into a charter. He has that power now.

From a Daily Kos blog today:

EFM Takeover Of Detroit Schools: Teen Mothers Arrested, Children taken Into Temporary Custody

Approximately a dozen teachers, teen mothers and their children were arrested and taken away by Detroit police while staging a peaceful sit-in protest at the Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit on Friday April 15th. Eight students, along with their children and some faculty members of the Catherine Ferguson Academy of Detroit, MI began the sit-in at the end of the school day in protest to Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb’s announcement to close the school for pregnant and parenting teens. The decision to occupy was made after many other attempts by students, staff and supporters to have their voices heard by EFM Robert Bobb through letter writing and petition campaigns, to no avail.

The protestors were told by police that they were trespassing and the building needed to be closed. The peaceful occupiers refused to leave and many were brought out in handcuffs. It has been reported by local news that “Some struggled, some screamed, all were put in squad cars and hauled away”, while many more protestors and supporters outside watched in shock. The students themselves say they did not resist arrest. One told local reporters, “We just stood there and they just arrested us one by one .”

…”On the heels of the shocking announcement last month by Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager (EFM) Robert Bobb to close up to eight schools and sell up to 45 schools to charter companies, he slated the highly successful and unique Catherine Ferguson Academy for closure. The school, which has been featured in the film Grown In Detroit documenting the school’s urban farm and in O: The Oprah Winfrey Magazine, boasts a 90% graduation rate and 100% college and higher education acceptance upon graduation. The award winning school is specifically for pregnant and parenting teens and their children, offering a wide range of classes and child care. It is the only school of its kind in the nation.

“The school provides pre-natal and parenting classes, and offers high school student mothers the opportunity to finish their high school education immediately after giving birth by providing on-site daycare, early childhood development services, and pre-school for their children, as well as on-site medical, dental and social services, so the young women don’t have to miss school to attend appointments. What also makes CFA unique is its organic garden and farm with chickens, goats and a horse, which the students maintain as part of their science education.”

More on the arrests from an earlier article:

Protesters Arrested at DPS’ Catherine Ferguson Academy

Some struggled, some screamed, all were put in squad cars and hauled away.

“To go in like storm troopers to arrest people who were carrying on a peaceful protest during spring break to preserve their school was just absolutely outrageous,” Driver said.

At least a dozen people were arrested, including two moms who had their small kids with them.

Baldwin’s three-year-old daughter was there, and she says she would do it all again if it meant saving the school that helped save her.

“I’m glad I took part in this. I’d do it a hundred times more to help the cause,” she said.

They were ticketed and let go. There was a DPS spokesperson at the scene. He said that “they understand that a school can mean so much to students, parents and teachers, but that a protest is not the way to go about trying to get your message heard. Instead, they are encouraged to talk to Robert Bobb and show that their school needs to stay open.”

Talk to Robert Bobb? Really. They had been trying. I doubt he would listen at all. He is one of the Broad Academy fellows who are famous for not caring for the feelings of teachers. Here is his page at the Broad Institute.

In fact Bobb is the one who walked out of his own town hall meeting when parents started speaking out.

Detroit’s Robert Bobb left his own town hall meeting very upset. Cancelled later meeting.

During a contentious meeting interrupted by chants and catcalls Tuesday, students, parents and teachers lambasted a plan to close 14 Detroit schools and convert 45 others to charter schools.- Detroit News

According to a report I got today from community activists in BAMN, “angry parents, students, teachers, and BAMN civil rights activists left Detroit schools Emergency Manager Robert Bobb stammering, shaking, and fleeing his “town hall” meeting” last night. He also canceled a second meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. this evening at Cody H.S.

In this school teen parents had someone to take care of their kids, and even more. Here is an interesting post in the comment section…seems a real shame to close such a school.

This school has a 90% graduation rate with 100% of graduating students going onto either 2 or 4-year colleges. This school also has a HUGE farm with honey bees, horses, chickens, turkeys and a garden. The only thing people are looking at is the “teen mom” thing. They are defending the only school willing to take care of them AND their children. What is going to happen to these students if the school closes?

Snyder is a dictator and it looks like a racist as well. Or maybe anyone who has no clout or power that he and his minions can walk all over if fair game. Michigan we can’t let this happen. Protest! Fight back anyway you can in a non-violent way. We need to get National media attention. I worry however that our media is being taken over by the Big Money Corporations. My local newspaper certainly isn’t giving me any info. For the best news I have to go to MSNBC. Regular news channels aren’t very informative. We have to dig for the truth and people and the big corporate machine want it that way. An ignorant populace is much easier to manipulate. I worry that the everyday working person has no idea how bad our government really is. Michigan is no longer operating under a democracy it is a Dictatorship. Thanks for this story on Catherine Fergurson Academy.. I saw a story on it tonight on the Rachael Maddow Show on MSNBC.
