Two leading commentators on vastly different sides of the political spectrum will duke-it-out Thursday in a debate over President Obama’s first 100 days at the Fountain Street Church in downtown Grand Rapids (see map here).

Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation, a left-leaning weekly magazine, will debate Rich Lowry, syndicated columnist and editor of the conservative National Review. The debate, sponsored by Grand Valley State University’s Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, is scheduled to take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Fountain Street Church has been known for providing a public forum for notable and controversial speakers, politicians and thinkers into its sanctuary over the decades, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Malcolm X, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Susan B. Anthony, William Jennings Bryan and Julian Bond, among many others.
