Detroit City Councilman Kwame Kenyatta on Saturday announced his plans to file a petition to run for mayor in the city’s regular election in August.

Kenyatta made news recently when he voted for the Cobo transfer deal and weeks later voted for an injunction against the mayor’s veto of the council’s majority vote which canceled the Cobo deal.

The regular mayoral primary will be held August 4, and the general election is in November.

The May 5 special election will determine whether businessman David Bing or Interim Mayor Kenneth Cockrel will serve the rest of resigned mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s term.
