Several Michigan lawmakers are proposing a bill that would create a $5,000 penalty for anyone interrupting a church service. Bill sponsor Rep. Dave Agema of the 74th district, which includes parts of Kent and Ottawa counties, says that a few dozen legislators have agreed to co-sponsor the legislation.

This bill comes in response to an incident that took place shortly after the election last November when a radical gay rights group infiltrated and interrupted a Sunday morning service at Mt. Hope Church outside Lansing, which I condemned in a commentary at the time. As long as this bill, the text of which is not available yet, does not infringe on the right to protest outside of a church on public property, I would support the idea.
