Mitt Romney, son of legendary Michigan governor and former auto executive George Romney, won a straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference meeting last weekend in Washington. The gathering of hundreds of conservative activists takes a straw poll each year to see which candidate they most support in the next presidential election. Romney won with 20% of the vote, followed by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal with 14% and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas tied at 13% each.
It should be noted that this poll does not necessarily indicate who Republicans will support in the election, especially one that won’t take place for nearly four years. Romney also won last year’s CPAC straw poll, yet John McCain beat him out during the Republican primaries in 2008. But at a time when Republicans find themselves out of power in both the White House and Congress for the first time in 16 years, it provides an indication of where conservatives are looking for someone to lead them out of the political wilderness.
