Democrat Mark Schauer and a campaign fund he controlled while in the state Senate have agreed to pay the state the largest election campaign finance fines in Michigan history, reports Chris Christoff of the Detroit Free Press. The fund was his campaign for Senate.

Under an agreement reached with the Secretary of State’s office, Schauer’s campaign admitted to having donated more than the $20,000 per candidate allowable under the law when he donated to the Senate Democratic Fund. As a result, his campaign will pay a $6,000 fine, plus turn over the $202,250 originally donated to the Senate Democratic Fund. The total pay out to the state is $208,250.

The Senate Democratic Fund will pay at $10,000 fine.

The improper donations were made in the 2006 cycle.
