The White House has removed a great deal of pressure on General Motors by deciding to give an additional $4 billion in loans to the automaker before they look at the restructuring plans that the company submitted earlier today. Automotive News reports:
The U.S. government will release $4 billion in additional rescue loans to General Motors today as planned, a White House aide said, ahead of the deadline for the automaker to submit a new survival plan.
GM has already received $9.4 billion. The additional money was allocated, but it was expected that it would not be released until after GM turned in their restructuring plan to Congress and the Treasury Department. Talks with the UAW on concessions to help the company survive lean economic times have been touch and go lately as the two sides disagree over health care matters.
Chrysler is also due another $3 billion, but the White House had not announced the release of those funds prior to submission of Chrysler’s proposal.
