Jackson Community College (JCC) is responding to reports that a man revealed a gun on campus Tuesday and said he was looking for a student at the Da Vinci High School Institute. The campus is not shut down but is now on a heightened security alert.
There will be extra patrols during school hours and the doors are locked at the Da Vinci Institute High School, which is on the JCC campus. A JCC spokesperson did not reveal the man’s identity but said he was not enrolled at JCC. He allegedly appeared on campus flashing a gun on Tuesday saying he was trying to find a Da Vinci Institute High School student. It took two days for word of the incident to get to administrators at the high school and the college.
JCC has a picture of the man and is seeking a restraining order against him. The school has asked that the ABC Academy daycare located on campus keep all children inside until further notice. JCC sent out a security alert informing all students and employees of the incident and advising them to report suspicious behavior.
JCC was already considering heightening campus security before the incident because new dorms on campus mean students are there day and night. JCC is in close contact with Jackson City Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
This is the fourth time this month that a Midwestern school has had to respond due to a threat of violence.
