In the wake of a round of massive layoffs by newspapers all around the country, a new Pew survey finds that more Americans are getting their news from the web than from newspapers:
The internet, which emerged this year as a leading source for campaign news, has now surpassed all other media except television as a main source for national and international news.
Currently, 40% say they get most of their news about national and international issues from the internet, up from just 24% in September 2007. For the first time in a Pew survey, more people say they rely mostly on the internet for news than cite newspapers (35%).
Television is still the leading source for most people, but among younger people even that is being challenged by the internet. Those under rate TV and the internet equal in terms of where they get their news, 59% for each. In their last survey from September 2007, television led the internet 68% to 34% in that regard.
