‘Straight pride’ shirts at Tea Party rally draw fire

By Todd A. Heywood | 04.12.10 | 7:20 am

LANSING– State and national organizations who represent the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community are expressing outrage over t-shirts bearing the slogan “Straight Pride” offered for sale at a Saturday rally of the Tea Party Express.

The person selling the t-shirts told the Michigan Messenger that his company — the name of the company could not be made out on the tape due to a loud blast of noise, but it ended in “free media” — was an official sponsor and financial supporter of the Tea Party Express, saying that they typically give 10-15 percent of their sales to the organization. He wore a button saying “official sponsor.”

It was offered for sale at a Capitol rally along with buttons featuring Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and a host of other conservative causes and ideas. The company also offered other t-shirts carrying slogans like “Fox News Fan,” the Second Amendment written out in the shape of a handgun and a drawing of two stick figures with one holding a gun to the head of the other and labeled “socialism.”

Gay advocacy groups say the shirts are reminiscent of the “white pride” slogan adopted by racist groups who oppose equality.

“It’s like white supremacy,” says Penny Gardner, president of the Lansing Association for Human Rights, a Lansing area lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights group. “It’s as if they are saying the idea of supremacy is some how the American way. The American way is about equality, and equality is all we’re looking for.”

“It sends a message that this is a cause for a certain group of people,” says David Holtz, executive director of Progress Michigan. “That group is older white people, straight apparently. It sends the message that if you are not in the group, you really aren’t welcome.”

“What’s troubling is the idea they are getting support and clearly making money off a vendor who is making money off discrimination against gay and lesbian people,” said Holtz. “And they think that’s OK. That’s what’s troubling.”

The connection comes as a new University of Washington poll found that of those Americans who supported the Tea Party movement, “only 35% believe Blacks to be hardworking, only 45 percent believe Blacks are intelligent, and only 41% think that Blacks are trustworthy. Perceptions of Latinos aren’t much different. While 54 percent of White Tea Party supporters believe Latinos to be hardworking, only 44% think them intelligent, and even fewer, 42 percent of Tea Party supporters believe Latinos to be trustworthy. When it comes to gays and lesbians, White Tea Party supporters also hold negative attitudes. Only 36 percent think gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to adopt children, and just 17 percent are in favor of same-sex marriage.”

“They are working very hard at being a fringe group, and succeeding,” said Holtz.

“‘LGBT Pride’ has long been an inspiring, powerful and celebratory rallying call, and its appeal is obvious. But this doesn’t appear to be a case of imitation is the highest form of flattery. Instead, it’s veiled homophobia in action, and peddling homophobia and profiting from it are both immoral and unacceptable,” said Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Daryl Presgaves, spokesperson for the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network GLSEN), said the fundraising connection was “a cause for concern.” GLSEN is a national organization working on creating safe school environments for the LGBT students and staff across the country. He said the group was particularly troubled that parents allowed a young man to purchase the t-shirt.

“It’s sad and troubling that some parents instill values of exclusion and teach their children to disrespect and bully those who are different from them. These shirts promote harassment and bullying of actual or perceived LGBT youth, plain and simple,” he said in a statement. “We hope the parents at the very least have the common sense and decency to not let their children wear such shirts to school, where they would contribute to what is already an incredibly hostile environment for LGBT youth, especially in middle school, where 39 percent of LGBT middle school students experience physical assault in school because of their sexual orientation. Seeing young people where these shirts is yet another reminder of why Friday’s National Day of Silence is as important today as it was when students created it in 1996.”

“It’s shameful,” says Michael Cole, spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, a Washington D.C. based LGBT rights group. “Homophobia has no place in our country, let alone as a tool for groups to profit from.”

Cole had a message for the candidates who attended the rally Saturday night as well.

“Anyone who is running for office should be mindful of these sorts of practices, because they don’t have a place in our country,” Cole said. “It especially shouldn’t be associated with our elected officials.”

Speaking at the rally were gubernatorial candidates Mike Bouchard and Mike Cox. In addition, Brian Rooney, a candidate vying for the nomination of the Republican party to challenge Mark Schauer, a freshman Democrat from Battle Creek, spoke. Steven Mobley, a candidate for the 62nd district of the state House also addressed the crowd. All of them are Republicans.

“Michiganders who believe in our constitutional values of justice and equality—no matter their sexual orientation, their race, their ethnicity, their age, no matter their political affiliation or religion—must unite against the hatred, the homophobia, the racism being promoted by violent factions in our state,” said Marilyn Vogler, spokesperson for the Democratic Party’s LGBTA Caucus.

“It is clear from events at the April 10 Tea Party Express rally on our capitol steps in Lansing that homophobia and racism are alive and well in Michigan,” said Marilyn Vogler, spokesperson for the Democratic Party’s LGBTA Caucus. “The day was hi-lighted by stark black and white ‘straight pride’ shirts, calls to impeach Obama, a poster with a black hand holding a knife stabbing the Statue of Liberty. Certainly, Tea Party folk have a right to express their opinions, but homophobia and racism should not be tolerated, least of all by our elected officials.”

Clarification: The vendor interviewed for this article, who was wearing a button saying “official sponsor,” has told the Michigan Messenger that he was not the vendor selling the “straight pride” t-shirts. The vendor maintains that while their tables were next to each other, the shirts in question were being sold by a different company.

I hate to say this, but gays HAVE won some ground in the recent years.

Not that there SHOULDN'T be equality, but it's gotten to the point where you can't say ANYTHING that points out the obvious; that they're deviate from the norm.

Sorry guys and gals, but you're like what, 10% of the population?

The same exists for other minorities too; you have to watch what you say around black people, or you might get sued for “racism.” Watch out, don't say “handicapped,” you have to say “impaired.” No wait, that could be offensive too, let's use “challenged.” Nope, that still reminds them that they lack the same abilities as everyone else. Gotta use “people with disabilities.”

I'm afraid the gays are overstepping their boundaries too. People are losing their jobs because some gay felt “discriminated against.” That's the attitude now; anything that reminds a gay that people reproduce sexually is seen as “disparaging to gays.”

I hate to say it, but I really don't want to know about your life-style. I think that if gays can be “out and proud” and wear shirts that spell out their sexual choice, orientation, WHATEVER, then straights can do the same.

I really don't see what the problem is; this “teabagger” meeting, or whatever you want to call them, wasn't a “let's hate gays” meeting. They didn't go out with the specific agenda of hating gays. So why is it they're being compared to the KKK where they get together for the sole purpose of hating all other races and mutually masturbate their racist egos?

While we're complaining about gays flaunting the victim card, I gotta say that the “hate crime” laws really piss me off.

Why is it that when someone commits a crime, it must be compounded with the fact that their victims were of a particular race? Gender? Sexual orientation? Isn't that legal, command discrimination?

So if a thief breaks into my house, and beats me up, the guy gets away with less time in jail because I'M NOT GAY? BLACK? JEWISH? ETC?

A crime's a crime. Let the punishment fit the crime. I think it's stupid that a perpetrator of a crime get more or less time based on a person's minority status. That's lame. That's special rights. Whatever happened to “equality?”

You know what really pisses me off? When minorities use their victim card to get freebies, if not outright flaunt it. I live in Salinas, CA, and a historic drive-in that had been around for decades was closed down, and do you know why? Cuz some damn CRIPPLE wanted to sue them for not meeting disability standards; the bathroom had bars for people in wheel chairs, but then there were no ramps, although there was always staff available to help if asked. Maybe I wouldn't be so harsh if it weren't for the fact that the guy was actually going all up and down California searching out businesses to sue. He wasn't even handicapped his whole life either to boot; he had only recently lost his ability to walk in a car crash, and was taking out his anger. The state of California finally put a stop to him after shutting down 400 businesses in law-suits. Needless to say, the business owner of the drive in at our town couldn't afford the law suit, so he had to shut the drive in, one of our towns landmarks, down. THANK you, you CRIPPLED FCUK. As long as people are using laws put in place to “stop hate” to do that EXACT SAME THING, HATE, don't expect me to feel sorry.

I say COOL it with the shirts. I could care less how much “history” you have of oppression. I bet you've never even suffered, your life sucks and you just want attention, you have this newfound victim card that suddenly gives significance to your life, and you're flaunting it. If you don't want straight people wearing “straight pride” shirts, then keep your “gay pride” shirts in your closet. I don't care if you're black and you've historically suffered. That's too bad, and I'm against discrimination, but I'll still think it's stupid that you're wearing a “black pride” shirt. The mexicans have had it bad too; they come, pick lettuce and break their backs for little pay, and then when the season's over, their “all-American” employer calls immigration on them. I'd still think they'd be stupid for wearing “brown pride” shirts.

You're not special. Take away your precious “sexuality,” you're just another regular person.

If you can wear your “gay pride” shirt, then straights can wear “straight pride” shirts.

I think most of the str8 people on here are the exception to the norm…or all the str8 people i know are secretly harboring all this anger and hostility towards the gay community.

As far as hate crimes goes, don't worry, I was gay bashed, had my face smashed in an lost my front teeth, even though i was verbally assaulted with anti gay insults and singled out for being gay, they did not prosecute it as a hate crime. That is how a majority of hate crimes go. They rarely enforce then hate crime statues. So rest assured, i received no “special” treatment.

My life is pretty fabulous actually. I love my life and if you think being gay is only sexual, then i would say you don't know many gay people. Which seems to be the case with most people here. I know plenty of str8 people and dare i say i even have close friendships with them. Yes, can you imagine it?!?!

The gay people i know do wonderful work to help the community and the larger community as a whole. We do not see a world where we work everyday to deny another person of their civil rights as some str8 people do. The gay community isn't interested in passing amendments to deny Str8 people of anything.

I just don't get all the rage over a tee-shirt. It seems totally irrational and whiny. Get over it! Its a tee-shirt! If the worse thing in your life is that someone thinks wearing a shirt is offensive then how lucky are you.

I think its easy to forget how privileged str8 people are. There are no laws denying you employment, housing, marriage, adoption etc.

I say the same thing back to you: You're not special. Take away your precious “sexuality,” you're just another regular person.

    • ChrisLW

“I bet you've never even suffered, your life sucks and you just want attention, you have this newfound victim card that suddenly gives significance to your life, and you're flaunting it.”

Actually, most if not all gays have faced discrimination at some point in their lives. Gay bashing, verbal or physical, goes on constantly. I'm not a bit flamboyant (the main target of gay bashers), and even I have walked down the street and had someone throw their food at me and scream “fag.” I imagine my more “noticeably” gay peers must get it on a regular basis. Not to mention, gays still don't have marriage rights, adoption rights, or employment protection. But in your opinion, it is more important to save the employment of those who are being fired from jobs because of their disruptive homophobia. And in your opinion, hate crime laws (which were passed because LGBTs are frequently targeted in assaults) are special rights, even though their owner is often dead when they are applied. “Whatever happened to equality” you ask. That's a very good question – ask it to the people who passed prop 8, or the people supporting DADT.

You like to flip the table, and say because there are hate crime laws, and because some LGBTs are asserting that this SPECIFIC instance of tea-baggers wearing straight pride shirts is meant to be a “fuck-you” to gays, that you are the underdog. You say you get tired of seeing the victim card, but you've been flashing it your entire post. What's really going on here is that, as you basically said in the beginning of your post, you don't give a fuck about minorities. Hell, that's fine with me. But for you to claim that minorities actually have it better than the majority now, just because of hate crime laws and the fact that some people may not like what you say, is ridiculous. Maybe, if you're so tired of the “victim card,” you and others could make it disappear by actively supporting full legal equality for gays. But you're too preoccupied whining about your own inability to use epithets without being labeled an asshole to care about important things.

Civil rights are for everyone. Equal rights mean the same for all. So, using the Americans with Disabilities Act to “prove” your point was evidence of misunderstanding or lack of understanding. NOWHERE is it written, stated or implied, that the Constitution and Bill of Rights exclude people with disabilities, people of color, etc etc. You have the right to assemble … unless you're disabled? No. The absurdity is that we are going one by one to “allow” the Constitution rights by a complaint driven anti-discrimination law!! The protected classes are those that have been denied access, participation, so on based on their being different from white, landowning presumably straight men.

A Supreme Court decision that “determined” Indians/Native Americans are a full human! A Constitutional amendment to ALLOW women to vote! So on and so on. The last to get the same full rights are homosexuals – regardless of gender identity, etc etc. It is irrelevant what percent of the population your group constitutes. You are entitled simply because you are a full-fledged person.

The beauty of the Americans with Disabilities Act is that it is the only protected class where EVERY ONE of us can suddenly become a member! If we aren't already. Not all functional limitations a visible.

So, just stop with the stupid, mean, irrational already!! : )

  • rose143

These are the same people who believe in “white power” and burn crosses.

  • mittenchick

These shirts were more designed after the “gay pride” shirts than the white pride. Love how this article likens it to white supremacy groups, but fails to correlate it to what would be the actual equivalence~the gay pride shirts. And, I sure don't remember any fuss about those shirts! I am allowed to be proud that I am straight, just as much as someone who is gay can be proud that they are gay.

    • ChrisLW

Actually take the time to read the article before you comment. The controversy comes from the fact that it is tea-baggers, one of whose goals is to prevent marriage equality, who are producing the shirts. Of course you're allowed to be proud that you're straight. But I don't appreciate tea-baggers who want to withhold or strip my rights away mocking me.

And by the way, you don't remember any fuss about gay pride shirts? In schools there was plenty of fuss from radical religious and homophobic parents and instructors, and even more fuss from some churches (that still goes on) that people are actually proud to be gay let alone stating it in public. I wish I had your selective memory.

    • clogie

You already are “allowed” to be proud of being straight… because there is no social/cultural penalty for being straight.

When gay people (or any minority) express pride, they are trying to empower each other and lift up those who don't feel they can live their lives safely and openly.

When straight people wear a “straight pride” tshirt, it is a message to the gay community that they are not accepted as being equal citizens.

I feel like I am part of the Tea Party Movement and I think those are stupid shirts. Why give the other side ammo. We should concentrate on one easy concept, Liberty. Liberty solves all.
It’s Tea Time Tea Party Flags. It’s Tea Time is the Rally cry that is sweeping the nation. Fly the flags and show your friends and neighbors that you are a proud member of the Tea Party Movement. The more we show we are part of the Tea Party the more we will grow the Tea Party. Fly the flags that promote liberty and the Tea Party Movement not just a Tea Party Group. Please take the time to visit our site at http://www.itsteatime.org

    • adamleben

I am just shocked. Your stating its about liberty yet going lalalala my own “party” just attacked the Gay community horribly, and ignores their equality, civic rights and liberties.

WAKE UP, your party is against Liberties for all but for liberties for only the party members. I am for liberties but since I am a gay male as your party just showed in my state capitol I am not welcome nor affirmed. I just drove by minutes ago, and saw the thankful message of What Makes America Work from Progress Michigan.

      • Anonymous

One thing the Tea Party isn’t a party it is a voting block. It isn’t Republican or democrat. As far as that shirt goes, that was a carny shirt salesman. I think it was stupid. You have the freedom to be any way you want to be. I could care less if you are gay. I would caution you against making a deal with the Devil. They will give you your right to marriage but they will take all your other rights away. Make no mistake, the dems are not necesarily your friends, but they will pretend and use you for votes as they change us to socialists/slaves. You have to realize that the Tea Party Movement is fighting for their rights but they are fighting for yours also.
By the way the capitalist in me says you should see our Liberty flags at http://www.itsteatime.org I do beleive Liberty is something we can all agree with.

  • mikeveeshir

It's funny how you're the only one to see this guy.

Hmmm, why it's almost as if those two pics could have been taken anywhere or anywhen and don't prove a thing!
Where's the pic of the guy with his “Official Sponsor” button?

Great “journalism” on this one. Make the lie big enough and get people arguing the merits and not the fact that it didn't happen.

You get your yellow journalism award! Bravo!

    • ruqueer

      Whats your point?

      • mikeveeshir

That nobody else saw those shirts or that guy there.
Those pictures do not back up the story.
I know someone who was wandering around there for 3 hours and he didn't see that guy.

        I don't believe this story.

        • ChrisLW

Wow, dude, they're reporting on it in other places. Do you really trust your one friend who was “wadering” for 3 hours over multiple newspapers, whose job it is to confirm these things?

          • mikeveeshir

Which other newspapers? All the reports I've seen come back to this article.

From what I've seen, they're reporting that this guy saw it.

  • dantheman423

I don't get man, I just don't get it. Why is there such a fuss and grumblings being made about a shirt with a little sarcastic joke written on it? Now before people start saying things like it draws on such and such many years of racism and discrimination, PLEASE!!!!!!!! The individuals who oppose this shirt are just mad that conservative/ republicans are finally fighting back and doing what their opponents have been doing for years now.

Please tell me why is it okay and unoffensive for people to wear shirts that say: “FUTURE PORNSTAR” or “SLUT” or “GOT COCK?” In my opinion That is so much more offensive than “STRAIGHT PRIDE” or “GAY PRIDE” for that matter. To say that one is okay and the other isn't is the definition of hypocrisy. Last time I checked the right to free speech is still part of the First Amendment and Constitution, for the time being any way.

As for the actual news article itself, where was the bi-partisanship of the article's author? The answer is nowhere in sight because the only mention of the shirts supporters or creators was to say that the were an “official sponsor” of the Tea Party event. There was not one single quote or even a single word in that article that leads me to believe that whoever wrote is trying to do nothing more than promote their own agenda. The press is supposed to be completely unbiased in their reporting of the news, but as far as I can tell this article is completely one sided, but what else is new the media has not been fair and balanced since before I was born. Now before people start saying that Fox News is just as bad let me say this, at least Fox News tries by giving people like Alan Colmbs and Greta Van Susteren (both democrats) thier own shows, and also has liberal people on almost all of thier shows as guests to offer their own perspective and allows people to try and see things from all sides and make their minds for themselves.

Do the people of the LGBT community realize all they have done is to bolster the confidence and prod the anger of people like myself? I live in Texas and would have had no idea about this rally that took place in Michigan and the “offensive” shirts that were sold there if the LGBT community had just let this roll off their back and had taken it for what I believe most people have, and that is an attempt at humor that I believe was succuessful. How many shirts were sold at that rally, maybe 50? Now because of the so called “offended” individuals having blown this thing way out of proportion more and more people will buy these shirts not just to exercise their right to free speech but also just to spite those who oppose the shirts too. How many of those shirts will now be sold becuase the LGBT community can't take a friggin' joke.

Does anybody reading this article realize that in Canada wearing a shirt that says “Gay Pride” is perfectly legal but wearing a shirt that says “Straight Pride” could get you thrown in jail for promoting hate speech? Well guess what folks its true and if anyone thinks that this is not where America is headed then wake up because there has already been legislation proposed in Congress that would allow for the very same thing to happen here in America.

  • David_in_Houston

They might as well be wearing a KKK Pride t-shirt. This is basically the same thing. Anyone that doesn't understand the “intent” of the message is utterly clueless. The people wearing this t-shirt don't support equality for gays, or any other minority group for that matter. THAT'S what make this so offensive.

    • phreighnq

Anyone who would assume intent without knowing the person who is wearing any shirt is being bigoted/discriminatory because they are judging the wearer purely on their appearance.

      • David_in_Houston

Anyone who would assume the intent of a KKK member without knowing the person who is wearing the white hood is being bigoted/discriminatory because they are judging the wearer purely on their appearance.

Yeah, I see your point. How could I have been so wrong?
I'm sure those German guys in those Nazi uniforms really loved those Jews too. I wouldn't want to judge them purely on their appearance.
        /end sarcasm

        • phreighnq

There is a clear difference between wearing a uniform vs everyday type of clothes. Even in the case of a uniform you can't always guarantee that the wearer agrees with everything the uniform stands for. Otherwise you are saying that it is not possible that any German soldier no matter how low of level did not hate all Jews which is extremely unlikely. And in the situation that is being discussed here it is not a uniform it's just a t-shirt with a saying that can be interpreted in multiple ways.

    I despise Hetero-phobia!

  • jalliemasins

The left can't seem to demonize these people enough. First, they blame tea party members for people of other races not showing up at rallies (sort of like blaming folks who show up for work for the absenteeism of others), and now they are conducting witch hunts on people exercising the same right they do.

The only shirts the left would be comfortable with white and straights wearing would be 'white shame' and 'straight shame' shirts. I guarantee the left would have no problems with this whatsoever. In fact, it would fit right in with their guilt-mongering agenda.

For all their talk of equality, these people are not familiar with the definition of the word. Affirmative action is equality. Doubles standards are equality. The gulf between the hetrosexual community and the gay community is only being widened by these people who live and breathe to bemoan their victimhood.

If I want to, I'll wear a White Pride t-shirt, a Straight Pride t-shirt, I love jello rather than pudding t-shirt, and when we get a White Caucus to match the Black Caucus in Washington DC, I'll think there is some fairness there. Actually, this separation/division is what the Whitehouse administration is pushing and loves…they are recreating racism and hatred of the Whites in the Black Race….there isn't any in the White Race but they're trying really hard to recreate it so that we'll have violence and riots in the streets, so they can call in their civil militia and have martial law…that's what it's all about folks. See the big picture and hate it! because it is ruining our Nation and you and everyone will have to live under the tyranny. Go about your own business. Be gay if you want to, with all the illnesses attached to it but keep your lifestyle(s) to yourself–just as we straight people do. We won't accept or approve of it….tolerate the sin–it is always amongst us…we always have to…we tolerate murderers, stealers, actions but we don't and won't approve, condone or push them on our children. Please grow up!

Ed Brayton, Todd Heywood, I ask you, Why is this patently false, misleading, orchestrated smear of a story still on your website?

  • ericscheie

The person selling the t-shirts told the Michigan Messenger that his company — the name of the company could not be made out on the tape due to a loud blast of noise, but it ended in “free media” — was an official sponsor and financial supporter of the Tea Party Express, saying that they typically give 10-15 percent of their sales to the organization. He wore a button saying “official sponsor.”

The above was denied by the person described as “selling the t-shirts” — who says that he neither sell them at the event nor had them for sale there. Moreover, he was not asked about them in the recorded audio, which makes no mention of the shirts, the stickers, of “straight pride.”

Someone needs to run a correction.
