The conservative blog RightMichigan has an interview with Michelle McManus, a state senator who plans to run for Secretary of State in 2010, in which she aims the usual outlandish Republican rhetoric at ACORN:

We’ve seen renewed voter interest in recent elections, and while I applaud that, the price we pay for increased participation cannot be guerrilla tactics by groups like ACORN. This might sound silly to some, but I believe only real, living people should get to vote.

This is highly irresponsible and inaccurate rhetoric. Everyone thinks only real, living people should get to vote, including ACORN, which has in place a great many safeguards to protect its voter-registration efforts. As usual, Republican partisans fail to acknowledge three crucial facts about ACORN: 1) that it is the victim, not the perpetrator, when their canvassers cheat the system and turn in fake names on registration cards; 2) that in nearly every case where one of their canvassers is caught handing in fake names, they were caught by ACORN first and turned in to local officials; and 3) that voter registration fraud virtually never leads to actual voter fraud.

McManus also offered blindly partisan arguments as to why the government should make it as difficult as possible for people to exercise their right to vote:

I do not support no-reason absentee voting. Anything the Democrats want so badly, I am naturally suspicious of and almost always opposed to. I get a little nervous when I hear people start talking about some of these “voter convenience” issues, like no-reason absentee voting.

Knee-jerk opposition to anything the other party favors is a bad idea when done by either party.
