The Washington Blade, a gay newspaper in Washington D.C., reports that Patrick Sammon, president of the national gay organization Log Cabin Republicans, says the group is at least $100,000 in debt.

In the story posted Friday on the Blade’s website, Sammon said while the group is in debt, it is currently paying the bills.

“It’s not like we’re not paying the rent or not paying the phone bill or anything like that,” he said. “We’re current on the bills that we owe, but we do have some debt that’s consolidated.”

To address the budget gap, Sammon said the group would likely cut its 2009 operational budget by 35 to 40 percent. It made a 20 percent budget cut in 2007, when it noticed the impact of the nation’s gathering economic crisis. However, the group had planned to see an increase in fundraising revenues based on previous presidential election seasons.
