As General Motors and Chrysler increased their demands last week for government funds from the federal government in the United States, the two American automakers also increased their requests from the Canadian government, where they are a major employer in Ontario in particular. Automotive News reports:
The Canadian units of General Motors and Chrysler LLC are seeking as much as C$10 billion ($8 billion) in aid from the Canadian and Ontario governments as they fight to survive an industrywide crisis, officials said on Friday.
The requests represent a big increase in the amount of help that the companies had previously said they needed. Canada had pledged C$4 billion in support at the end of last year.
GM is offering not to close any more Canadian plans next year if they get the funding.
