Developers of a controversial golf course in Benton Harbor are asking a federal judge to speed the proceedings in a lawsuit brought by area citizens who say the planned course involves unlawful taking of public parkland, the Kalamazoo Gazette reports.

Harbor Shores developers warn that if the suit drags on the golf course — which is billed as an economic development project for the area — may not be ready for use in 2009.

Protect Jean Klock Park filed suit to block the golf course construction. They argue that the public park, which has been improved with federal grants, should be preserved and that there has been inadequate environmental review of the project which involves delicate dune ecosystems.
