In unsurprising news given the steady drumbeat of bad economic reports lately, the state’s unemployment rate took a big jump in July, up .4 percent to 10.9 percent. Total employment dropped by 30,000 jobs while the number of residents unemployed increased by 15,000.

Just when the weekly unemployment claims were starting to go back down after a 3 week spike, this week’s new claims jumped up to 424,000. That’s 10,000 more than last week. The four-week average now stands at 438,500.

The Department of Labor’s Regional and State Employment and Unemployment Summary for April is out and the news is decidedly mixed. Michigan’s unemployment rate dropped .1, from 10.3 percent to 10.2 percent — but it did so while the actual number of jobs in the state went down.
