Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder won the Kent County GOP straw poll Thursday night at an event at which RNC Chairman Michael Steele spoke.

From Snyder’s press team, here are the results:

Kent County Straw Poll Results:
Rick Snyder: 44.26%
Mike Bouchard: 28.94%
Pete Hoekstra: 22.45%
Mike Cox: 3.52%
Tom George: 0.91%

Huron County Commissioner Tim Rujan evidently did not rate in the poll, or maybe he was not present. Either way this is a pretty strong showing for a Republican who is being eyed cautiously by conservatives in the party. Snyder is a newcomer to political candidacies, and some of his past actions — like supporting same-sex unions and making donations to Democrats — have irked many conservative activists, who have a base in west Michigan.

What is really interesting here is that clearly the East/West divide shows up when you consider the results below Snyder. Mike Bouchard should have scored low, being from Oakland County and all — but he tapped Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land who hails from West Michigan as his Lt. Gov choice and that clearly played well in Kent.

Meanwhile Holland Republican and classified information-challenged Pete Hoekstra made a decent showing.

But Attorney General Mike Cox’s showing combined with the continuing Manoogian Mansion scandal should have his team scrambling to shore up support in West Michigan. Cox hails from southeast Michigan, and you can bet that is going to play into this GOP nomination battle.
