NRC asks for study of cancer risks posed by nuke plants

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has asked the National Academy of Sciences to research the cancer risk associated with living near a nuclear power plant, the Institute for Southern Studies reports. The Commission said that “recurrent stakeholder requests” prompted the request for new research.

Feds agree to hearing on Fermi 3 nuclear waste storage, local snakes

The board that oversees the licensing of nuclear power plants has ordered a hearing on concerns raised by opponents of a new reactor planned by DTE Energy. The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board ruled July 31 that four of the concerns raised by environmental groups and people who live near DTE energy’s Fermi complex in Monroe County warrant further examination.

I just came across a report by the Kemeny Commission which was formed by President Carter in 1979 to study the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, and was interested to find that the commission had recommendations for nuke safety actions that should be taken by the press.
