Mid-Michigan township uses sewage to generate energy

The Delphi Township wastewater treatment plant, is among just three in the nation that produce electricity from methane gas generated during the sewage treatment process, WILX reports. As sludge is broken down by bacteria it produces methane gas which powers a turbine to generate electricity.

As the state considers whether to issue permits for new coal-fired power plants in Rogers City and Bay City, some suggest that the Michigan could better meet future electricity demand by firing up some of its dormant gas-fired power plants. State allows rate increase for gas from Consumers Energy
