Businessman Dave Bing, a former Pistons standout, beat interim Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin during Tuesday’s special mayoral election.

Bing will serve out the remainder of ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s term. The winner of the August primary and November general election will take office in January to start a new full term.

Early returns in Detroit give Bing a sizable lead

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that with 81 percent of precincts reporting, challenger Dave Bing has a 54-48 lead over interim Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. in today’s special election in Detroit. Those results do not include absentee ballots, however, which favored Cockrel significantly during the primary election a few months ago.
