The reason for the request?

Mount Clemens City Manager Doug Anderson told the paper:

Let me put it this way: I’m all in favor of art in public places, but in my opinion, that piece is not suitable for outdoor display in Mount Clemens.

But the Anton Art Center’s Executive Director Jennifer Callans disagreed:

I understand why the city felt it was necessary to remove it from public view. But I do not regard the piece as being inappropriate for family viewing. This is a naked human body; it’s not erotic in any way.

According to the story, local residents and churches complained about the statue, installed Monday and removed Tuesday, citing concerns about exposing children to the work of art. The city also said it was concerned it might draw unnecessary attention during the Stars and Stripes Festival this weekend.

More than 300,000 people are expected to attend that event.
