Alma Wheeler Smith, the state House representative from Salem Township and former Democratic contender for governor, has announced she is endorsing Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in the Democratic primary. Smith will make the formal announcement at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Ypsilanti. An undisclosed number of Washtenaw county Democrats will also endorse Bernero at the event.

A new Rasmussen poll shows a dramatic shift in the Republican primary, with Rep. Pete Hoekstra taking a significant lead in the race while Attorney General Mike Cox — at one time the solid leader in the field — appears to have faded into a distant third place. The Detroit Free Press reports:

GOP budget plan targets prisoner pay, phone calls

Under a budget proposal released last week, prisoners housed in the Michigan Department of Corrections would see their pay for work and educational assignments eliminated, and an increase the fees assessed for phone calls. Advocates for prisoners call the move “immoral” and the MDOC says it opposes the plan.
