A new survey conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unwanted Pregnancy and partner Cosmogirl.com finds that over one third of teenagers 13-19 and young adults 20-26 are involved in sending semi-nude and nude photos of themselves through the internet. According to the study, 22 percent of teen girls and 18 percent of teen boys have posted nude of semi-nude pictures or videos, while 36 percent of young adult women and 31 percent of young adult men say they have posted such pictures.
In addition to sending such pictures, 48 percent of teens reported receiving sexual messages through e-mail or instant message, and 64 percent of young adults report having received the same.
“Obviously, we think parents need to be really aware of what their kids are doing and be actively involved in what teenagers are doing on line,” said Lori Lamerand, CEO of Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan. “Teenagers clearly don’t understand the ramifications (of posting nude pictures online).”
Lamerand said Planned Parenthood has been aware of the trend for sometime and has adapted its educational programs to be more available online.
The study comes only months after Livingston County Sheriff officials threatened to charge teenagers in Pickney with possession and distribution of child pornography if their cellphones had a picture of 14-year-old girl. The picture, which she snapped of herself nude, was forwarded to some 200 phones of students in the district of 4,600 students.
