New Jersey commission on civil unions releases report criticizing unions as “unequal”

By Todd A. Heywood | 12.10.08 | 4:08 pm

The New Jersey Civil Unions Review Commission released a strongly worded and unanimously approved report Wednesday morning calling on New Jersey’s legislature to amend the state’s marriage laws to allow same-sex couples to be married. The 13-member commission was appointed as part of the law which authorized same-sex civil unions to review the legal, social, economic and medical consequences of the law.

The final report was made available via the web at 10 a.m. and can be found here.

The report concludes that the creation of civil unions has not addressed the social inequities in recognizing same-sex relationships and as a result many in civil unions have a “second class” relationship.
