DPS Superintendent absent from her own meeting

By Minehaha Forman | 12.09.08 | 8:30 am

At a meeting of DPS school officials titled “Conversation with the Superintendent” parents, teachers and students came out to voice their concerns about various issues within their own schools.

But there was someone missing: the superintendent.

DPS superintendent Connie Calloway was not present at the two-hour long town hall style meeting advertised as a “Conversation with Connie Calloway” on DPS’ website. When the Q&A session started, Calloway still was nowhere to be found.

Marie Thornton was the only school board member in attendance and she was sitting discretely in the crowd wearing a hat that shaded her face.

After the meeting I asked her why Calloway didn’t attend her own meeting. She replied. “She just doesn’t care.”

Problems brought up at the meeting showed that some DPs schools are lacking basic services. Teachers, parents and students complained about not having heat or lights in classrooms.
