A report that Gov. Jennifer Granholm could be in line for the Labor Secretary position in the Obama administration was warmly received by Frank Wiechert, business manager for Pipe Fitters local 636 in Detroit.

“I think she’d be great,“ he said. “She’s always been concerned about labor and knows about working families concerns in Michigan which has taken a downturn.”

Granholm is an economic advisor for President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team.

Whoever becomes Labor Secretary, Reichert said, the top priority must be to review free trade agreements to ensure that they will not outsource jobs.

The Michigan Pipe Trade Association is part of the United International Association of Pipe Fitters, Sprinkler Fitters and Plumbers, Reichert said, and has 11 locals across the state. There are 1800 working members in Detroit.

Representatives for the Teamsters and the AFL-CIO told Michigan Messenger that they preferred not to comment on potential nominees for the labor post.

The Washington Post reported that David Bonior, a former Congressman and Wayne State University professor of Labor Studies, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are also considered contenders for the position.
