Former Detroit mayor’s girlfriend:”I lied under oath”

By Minehaha Forman | 12.01.08 | 4:55 pm

Christine Beatty, ex-chief of staff to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, accepted a plea deal in court this morning that will have her plead guilty to two felonies, serve 120 days in jail, pay $100,000 in restitution fines, and spend five years on probation.

The deal Beatty accepted this morning is almost the same as the one Kilpatrick took four months ago. The main difference is the restitution fines. Kilpatrick has to pay a million dollars and Beatty only has to pay a tenth of that.

This isn’t the best deal or the only deal Beatty has been offered. In September she turned down two deals, one that called for only 60 days in jail with the same considerations as the current deal: plead guilty to two felonies, spend five years on probation and pay $100,000. Yet another deal offered her 150 days of jail time with the same restrictions as the other two offers.

At the time her legal counsel seemed to be banking on a full acquittal and advised Beatty to take the case to trail. But with time running out and a wobbly case, they had a change of heart. Of course 60 days would’ve been better but at least they got another chance at a deal.
