Former ambassador emerges in battle for MIGOP chair

A former ambassador and GOP fundraising powerhouse has thrown his hat into the ring for the chair of the Michigan Republican Party. Ron Weiser, who is the former ambassador to Slovakia and the founder of McKinley Real Estate in Ann Arbor, announced Friday via e-mail that he would seek the chairmanship, joining an already crowded field.

Soon after his announcement, Weiser got the nod from former GOP National Committeeman Chuck Yob. In an interview with the subscription-only news service, MIRS, Yob said:

“He’s a good businessman and understands what needs to be done,” Yob said. “Unity is such an important component. The last four years have been a mess and Ron brings both sides together.”

“Nothing against Welday or Hoogendyk. Both have a good future. Ron Weiser will be better at pulling forces together and raising the bucks,” Yob said.

Yob’s son, John, is working on Weiser’s campaign.

In his announcement the former Ambassador had this to say:

“As in all endeavors, leadership is key. This is why I am running to be our next State Chair. Many other fine Republicans have thrown their hats into the same ring, and each has attributes we would like to have in our next chair, but circumstances demand our next chair possess a unique combination of characteristics to successfully lead our party back to a majority and elect a governor. I believe I am best equipped to lead us to these goals.”

Weiser then listed his experience as a businessman, and his political connections as reasons he is the “best equipped.”
