James Carabelli is stepping down as chairman of the Macomb County Republican Party.
In a letter to party members, Carabelli acknowledged that his tenure as party boss has encompassed elections in 2006 and 2008 in which the Democrats had all the momentum.
“We have been fighting a very difficult headwind, not only here in Macomb County, but across the country,” he said. “But we never backed down from our principles and our beliefs.”
Macomb County has long been considered a bellwether county in presidential elections, home of the infamous Reagan Democrats. But in the last two elections, the county has shifted strongly toward the Democrats. Obama won the county with almost 60% of the vote in this year’s presidential election.
Carabelli became a lightning rod for controversy after the Michigan Messenger published a story quoting him saying that the GOP intended to use foreclosure lists as a basis for challenging voters at the polls. That resulted in a lawsuit by the Obama campaign against the Republican Party and an eventual agreement not to follow through on those plans.
