Nickel turns unprofitable as Michigan hopes for mining jobs

A recent economic forecast for northern Michigan listed mining jobs as one of the potential bright spots in the economy. But the recent economic shakeup has slowed global demand for metals, and Rio Tinto, the company that is trying to develop a nickel and copper mine in Michigan, has stated that the slowdown has caused it to reconsider planned expansions.

In “Slow economy put mines in a hole” the Salt Lake Tribune adds some details, reporting that the sharp decline in metal prices over the past few months means that about 30 percent of nickel mines are no longer profitable and that another global mining corporation, Xstrata PLC, plans to close two nickel mines in Northern Ontario.
