Dennis Archer out of 2010 Gov race before it starts

By Todd A. Heywood | 11.20.08 | 4:38 pm

Former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, 66, is out of the Democratic race for Governor before it has even gotten started. The former mayor and state supreme court justice announced he would not seek the Democratic nomination for governor in 2010.

His reason? it will take too much time away from two things he loves — the law and his family, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Archer was a Supreme Court Justice from 1985 to 1993 and then Mayor of Detroit from 1993 to 2001.

Other Democratic names floating around include current Lt. Gov. John Cherry, Flint Mayor Don Williamson, and former Lansing Mayor David Hollister. The Republican field of potentials include Congressmen Pete Hoekstra and Mike Rogers, and Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land. Republican Attorney General Mike Cox has already filed papers for his exploratory committee.
