Obama, McCain win Wisconsin primary; Hawaii reports record turnout for caucus

By LoRayne Apo-Joynt | 02.20.08 | 1:50 am

With 97 percent of precincts reported, presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain have been declared presumptive winners of their respective parties’ primary in Wisconsin.

As of 2:15 am EST:

Democratic primary results:

Barack Obama  636,073 votes, 58 percent of vote

Hillary Clinton  444,969 votes, 41 percent of vote

Republican primary results:

John McCain  219,846 votes,  55 percent  of vote

Mike Huckabee  147,855 votes,  37 percent of vote

Ron Paul  18,775 votes,  5 percent

In Hawaii, Democratic voters experienced long lines and confusion at the polls as turnout exceeded local party officials’ expectations.  There are reports that some polling locations ran out of ballots and have resorted to photocopying additional blank ballots to make up the shortfall.  The confusion appears to be related to three-step process in which voters must validate their voter registration, register for the Democratic Party, and then sign into the caucus.

As of this post, only 8 percent of precincts have reported across the Hawaiian islands; Obama leads Clinton 77 percent to 23 percent in these earliest results. The 12,000+ anticipated voters participating in today’s caucus were expected to surpass the previous Hawaiian record of 5,000 caucus voters.

Hawaiian Republicans will hold their caucus via party convention in May.
