After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Bristow denies he is running for MI-GOP youth chair

By Todd A. Heywood | 11.18.08 | 8:11 am

In a strange political twist, Kyle Bristow, the former chair and current communications director of Michigan State University’s chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, is denying he is seeking the youth chairmanship of the Michigan Republican Party.

In the YAF Blog, Bristow writes:

I have not announced plans to run for any official position within the MI-GOP. Someone who controls a Facebook profile for YAF created a group that advocates my running for the position of youth chairman of the MI-GOP. I did not create this Facebook group, and am somewhat irritated that whoever runs the YAF Facebook profile account not only launched it without my authorization, but also wrote “Viva Bristow” on the wall of the Facebook group to insinuate that I control the account. (I do not know of anyone other than me who uses “Viva” when hailing a right-winger.)

However, a press release on CR Nation, a web site for College Republican news, says otherwise:

Lansing (November 10, 2008) — The leading voice of conservatism at Michigan State University has announced that he’s a candidate for the open position of youth chairman in the Michigan Republican Party.

Kyle Bristow will actively campaign for the youth chairmanship, which will be elected at the State Republican Convention in February 2009.

“Michigan’s next generation of Republicans need a leader who is committed to defeating the liberals and spreading conservatism,” said Bristow. “They want a youth chairman who is focused on them — someone who will get results.”

Bristow, 22, recently served as chairman of the Young Americans for Freedom chapters at MSU. He has been involved in numerous political campaigns and is a former intern at the Virginia-based Leadership Institute, which trains up-and-coming conservatives in the tactics they need to defeat liberals.

The press release was also noted by Michigan Conservative Dossier blogger and conservative Republican activist Joe Sylvester. In an e-mail interview with Sylvester, he said the press release had come from Dennis Lennox, a Central Michigan University student and an ally of Bristow.

“Dennis said he sent out a press release for Kyle Bristow,” Sylvester said of the release.

Correction: After this article was published, Dennis Lennox sent an email Michigan Messenger saying that Joe Sylvester’s claim that he sent out a press release is “utterly false,” adding that he has had “no involvement with any campaign by Kyle Bristow for youth chairman of the Michigan Republican Party.” Michigan Messenger regrets the error.
