Racist vandalism in Buchanan, Michigan

By Ed Brayton | 11.17.08 | 7:36 pm

WNDU reports on an incident of racist vandalism in Buchanan, Michigan:

Members of the South County Democratic Club woke up Saturday to find their building vandalized.

The building, located in the 500-block of Red Bud Trail, was vandalized with swastikas and racist comments…

The chair of the South County Democratic Club says the building has been vandalized once before and was painted over, but that this time it was more hateful.

“It’s very derogatory to the fact that this is a country where we do it peacefully, without this kind of hate. And we have our disagreements, but we move forward for the betterment of the country and work on it peacefully and not in a hateful way,” remarked Jess Minks.

Similar incidents are happening all over the country. For all the talk that the election of Barack Obama as president is evidence that America has transcended race (and I think there is some truth to that), it has also lifted the veil to reveal a dark subculture bubbling beneath the surface (to mix a few metaphors). I don’t think it’s a particularly large portion of the country. But if it’s even 5%, that’s more than 15 million people.
