Blackwater to be fined for illegal arms shipments

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 11.14.08 | 1:00 pm

Thanks to Zachary at TPMmuckraker for pointing out this McClatchy report about State Department plans to fine the private military contractor Blackwater, founded by Michigan native Erik Prince, for illegally importing hundreds of automatic weapons to Iraq.

The State Department found that Blackwater, which has received $1.2 billion in federal contracts, failed to file paperwork required for export of military hardware. Instead, the company hid weapons in shrink-wrapped pallets shipped from its North Carolina headquarters.

McClatchy reports that though some of the illegally imported weapons are believed to have ended up on Iraq’s black market, no criminal charges have been filed in the case. A source at the State Dept. told McClatchy that the fine would be “way in the millions” of dollars.

It's a start. And if there are indictments for the murder of the civilians, maybe some of my faith in our system will be restored. Every time I see the photo of the young Iraqi boy murdered, one of thousands murdered, I feel that jail sentences and fines are woefully inadequate. God help us when the reckoning comes.
