Candidate wants recount to test Diebold voting machines

Cathy Church, the independent candidate for prosecutor in Marquette has asked for recount of her race. Though the recount is not expected to reverse election results — Church lost to the incumbent Democratic candidate by a 6 percent margin — she says it will be a check on the county’s Diebold brand electronic voting machines which have never been audited.

Church told the Marquette Mining Journal that supporters of her campaign identified an unusual pattern of undervotes — ballots that have no votes recorded for some races. This, she said, coupled with reports that Diebold machines have had problems related to undervotes elsewhere, moved her to request the recount which will cost her $400.

“I kind of look at it as a win-win situation … ” she told the Mining Journal, “either we’re going to find out that we have a flawless system, and in that case we win, or we’re going to find out that we have a system that is going to get repaired and in that case, we win.”
