The text-message scandal engulfing Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick grew this week with the involvement of Wayne County Circuit Judge Robert Colombo and the Detroit City Council.
On Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press reported that Colombo ordered the release of secret documents that are believed to confirm the mayor’s effort to prevent the release of text messages as part of a settlement in a police whistle-blower lawsuit.
The lawsuit was brought by former Deputy Chief Gary Brown and former mayoral bodyguard Harold Nelthrope, who charged that Kilpatrick unfairly retaliated against them for participating in an internal affairs investigation of wrongdoing by people close to the mayor. The release of the documents will likely be delayed as Kilpatrick has said he will appeal Colombo’s decision.
Later Tuesday, City Council members expressed frustration at having approved the $8.4 million lawsuit without being made aware of a secret pact made by the mayor’s lawyers. the Council voting 7-1 to conduct an investigation of the city Law Department and a financial investigation of the mayor’s office.
The developments this week come in the wake of an investigation by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy into allegations of perjury against Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff and apparent lover, Christine Beatty, who has resigned her post.
