Gridiron governor for Michigan?

By Todd A. Heywood | 11.11.08 | 11:27 pm

Former MSU football coach, and current MSU Board of Trustees member George Perles has told WILX NBC-10′s Tim Staudt that he is going to run for governor as a Democrat in 2010.

The 74-year-old Perles has since confirmed his intentions to run with The MSU student newspaper, the State News.

As for the former coach’s philosophy on running a state, he told the State News it was a lot like football.

“The same thing goes — win, win, win, win.”

Perles may well be an old gridiron hero, but he is no idiot when it comes to politics. He is known to carefully weigh political options, such as his run for the MSU Board, before jumping in with both feet. Chances are good he is making this announcement while sitting on a stack of polls telling him he has a shot for the governor’s office in 2010.

Republican Attorney General Mike Cox has filed paperwork to create an exploratory committee for the office of governor. Expect to see Terri Lynn Land, the Republican Secretary of State, also file such a committee in the coming months.
