Report: Waxman to challenge Dingell on energy chairmanship

By Mike Lillis | 11.06.08 | 8:30 am

Wow — things are moving quickly in this brave new post-election world.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is planning to take on Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) as head of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, Roll Call reported Wednesday. The 27-term Dingell is a monolith in the Democratic Party, but has been criticized for using his influence to protect Detroit’s automakers from fuel-efficiency standards.

Gonna be a showdown.

Mike Lillis follows Congress for Michigan Messenger’s sister site, The Washington Independent.

Coddling the auto companies has not kept our jobs in Michigan or made them stronger in the market. It's time to challenge them to succeed and to make them stand up to Toyota and Honda and the rest. If they had embraced the challenge of fuel-efficiency and other necessary technologies instead of how to put video monitors into headrests we'd have a new generation of engineers in this state instead of couch-potatoes.
Waxman's been doing incredible work on the oversight committee; we could use the kind of tenacity he's had there to shape up our flabby energy policies.
