Hamtramck gay rights repeal wins

A referendum on the local ballot in Hamtramck that repeals a city human rights ordinance passed in July has succeeded. A final count is not yet known. Derek Smiertka, executive director of Michigan Equality, expressed disappointment but said local supporters will likely place another referendum on the ballot in the next two years to reverse the result.

“We’re excited to start the next phase of our educational progress in Hamtramck and we’ll be excited to see it back on the ballot in the near future.”

The city passed the ordinance prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual preference and gender identity in July, prompting an immediate movement to have it repealed.
