UPDATED: Report from Schauer campaign HQ in Battle Creek

11:03 p.m. — Kate Segal just declared victory.

The announcement that Obama has just gained enough electoral votes to become president has the entire room on its feet cheering, hugging, now chanting “O-ba-ma!”, lots of tears. There is a continuous stream of screams and cries from the crowd. It is pandemonium here at the Holiday Inn.

There are nasty comments being screamed at Sen. John McCain’s call for unity as the crowd now watches McCain deliver his concession speech. McCain is actually very emotional, his speech quite powerful.

The crowd has gone nuts again with McCain’s acknowledgment of Gov. Sarah Palin; they jeer Palin who can be seen on television crying. And now the crowd here is waving good-bye to McCain and Palin as McCain wraps up his speech.

9:49 p.m. — Mark Schauer and Kate Segal, a Democratic state rep candidate just addressed the crowd here at the Holiday Inn, and Schauer told the crowd that things were trending well for him and said, “I would much rather be where I am than where the other guy is right now.”

Then he introduced Segal and his intro said that things were trending well enough for her that he wanted to introduce the next state rep for the 62nd district.

9:10 p.m. — I arrived at the Battle Creek Holiday Inn where Democrat Mark Schauer, candidate for the 7th Congressional District, and Calhoun County Democrats have gathered to watch election returns, just as cable networks called Michigan for Obama.

It was a madhouse here. Gov. Jennifer Granholm appeared shortly after the announcement on MSNBC and again the ballroom here at the Holiday Inn was rocked with cheers.

When Ohio was projected for Obama, again there were cheers. Overheard: “There’s another nail in the coffin.”

People are giddy and laughing and jovial. The mood is undeniably upbeat.
