ACLU challenges law on access to Michigan voter preference information

By Ed Brayton | 01.29.08 | 10:54 am

The ACLU of Michigan has filed a federal lawsuit against Michigan’s new primary law that provides voter party preference declarations to the Democratic and Republican parties but forbids that same information to be given to any other political party or organization.

The new primary law, which moved the date of the Michigan primaries up to Jan. 15, requires each voter to sign a piece of paper declaring which party’s primary they wish to vote in prior to being given a ballot. It further required that those voter declarations be given to the chairpersons of the Democratic and Republican parties while simultaneously making it illegal for any other political party, any news organization or any other entity to have access to those records. In its lawsuit, the ACLU represents the Green Party; the Libertarian Party; the Reform Party; and the Metro Times, a news organization.

Cowabunga The crass selfishness of politicians never ceases to amaze me.  There are so many things wrong with this law that the mind boggles when contemplating it.

I’m reminded of Jimmy Carter’s efforts at election monitoring in Third World countries. He commented on NPR that most states in the United States would not qualify as having free and fair elections.  And its because of crap like this.
