Long lines discourage voters in Detroit

By Ed Brayton | 11.04.08 | 7:44 pm

Election Protection is reporting that wait times have reached five hours at some precincts in Detroit where lines grew to more than 1,000 people at Beth Eden Baptist Church.

They said this was largely due to lack of staffing at the polling place.

This could cause many people to not be able to vote because they simply don’t have the time to wait. A study of the 2004 election in Ohio found that as many as 129,000 voters could not wait to register their vote due to long lines. This may also cause many polling places to have to stay open.

Federal law requires that every person in line to vote when the polls close has to be allowed to vote. That would obviously delay the results from those precincts as well.
