Bush calls for doubling funding for HIV/AIDS in Africa

In tonight’s State of the Union Speech, President George W. Bush called on Congress to approve an additional $30 billion over five years for funding in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.

“We can bring healing and hope to many more. So I ask you to maintain the principles that have changed behavior and made this program a success,” the President said. “And I call on you to double our initial commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS by approving an additional $30 billion over the next five years.”(http://www.nationalp…)

Currently the federal government spends $2.06 billion annually on fighting the disease in the Unites States. ( http://nhpf.ags.com/…)

The current funding covers nearly 550,000 people, providing access to HIV antiviral medications and other necessary medical treatment.

Five years ago, the President asked for and received $15 billion to fight AIDS in Africa, and according to the White House website, that money has helped 10 million people. (http://www.whitehous…)
