In the latest development in the text message scandal engulfing Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, his chief of staff and apparent lover, Christine Beatty, turned in her letter of resignation Monday effective Feb. 8.
While Kilpatrick still has not spoken publicly about the scandal, Beatty’s resignation is a sign that he realized that business as usual would no longer be tolerated by Detroit’s citizens.
In her letter, Beatty described how much of an honor it was to serve Detroit, detailing her role managing key departments and the day to day operations of the mayor’s office. Beatty ended the letter: “I painfully regret the devastation that the recent reports have caused to the citizens of Detroit, to my co-workers, to the mayor’s family and to my family and friends.”
Both Kilpatrick and Beatty may have committed perjury last year when they denied a romantic relationship in connection with a whistleblower lawsuit brought by two former Detroit police officials. The officials say they were forced off the police force by Kilpatrick for investigating his personal life, including parties at the Manoogian Mansion. Kilpatrick lost the case, which cost the city $9 million. A perjury investigation is under way.
