During Michigan’s August primaries, Michigan Messenger reported an incident where a Republican candidate for Eaton County sheriff, the county west of Lansing’s Ingham County, accused incumbent Eaton County Sheriff Mike Raines of stealing his political signs.
Criminal complaints were filed in the case, and the Michigan State Police continues its open investigation.
Stealing campaign signs is a misdemeanor in Michigan, punishable by 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine. The alleged incident did nothing to hurt the incumbent’s chances, however. He who won the primary handily on Aug. 5.
As we reported earlier:
Raines, 53, is the current Eaton County Sheriff and will continue in … office for another term since he faces no general election challenge from a Democrat.
But now, according to a report in the Lansing State Journal, Raines’ former opponent, Tom Reich, is back.
Reich filed the necessary paperwork to run as a write-in candidate for the post, which pays $82,713 a year.
Reich filed before Friday, the deadline in Michigan for signing up as an official write-in candidate. Candidates who seek write-in votes must register their names with the state in order for those write-in votes to be counted.
