After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Hate speech on the campus of EMU … Wayne State next

By Mark Maynard | 10.21.08 | 8:20 am

I was happy to see this morning that my local institution of higher learning, Eastern Michigan University (EMU), was being reported on in The Chicago Tribune. That is, I was happy until I read the article, which is about hate speech-shouting street preachers.

According to the article, “People known or perceived to be gay, lesbian, Jewish or Muslim were targeted by the group,” which claims to be with Soulwinners Ministries.

According to the Tribune:

Michael Venyah, co-founder of Soulwinners Ministries International, said Sunday that he and others were preaching the Gospel at the school.

Soulwinners’ Web site, which offers only an email address as a contact, describes their purpose this way, in part:

Soulwinners Ministries International is a Christian evangelism ministry dedicated to fulfilling the Lord Jesus Christ’s Great Commission, as stated in Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:19-20, and Acts 1:8, by going into all the world, preaching the Gospel to every person, and teaching Christians to witness for Christ.

Here’s a clip from the Web site explaining their Save Our Students campaign, of which this visit to my fair Ypsilanti was a part:

Daily, on college campuses, this country’s future presidents, pastors, professionals, are spoon-fed the strychnine of satan’s soul-damning, Christ-denying, lies, beneath the sugar-coated guise of “science” and “secular humanism”.

Daily, on college campuses, this country’s future policy makers, parents, are injected with insidious ideologies, inoculating them to sodomy, same-sex marriage, fornication, abortion, under the demonic deception denoted “diversity” and “tolerance.”

Something must be done to stem this satanic floodtide of lies threatening to drown and damn this country’s youth!

EMU President Susan Martin has indicated that she would be participating in a town hall-style event tomorrow called “Beyond Tolerance.” Details on that event, as well as comments by members of the EMU community, can be found at the Web site EMU Talk.

The following clip comes from a memo that President Martin sent to faculty and staff:

The administration understands and acknowledges the hurtful nature of the events and speeches that have occurred outside Halle Library this past week. Faculty and staff not fully aware of these occurrences should know that remarks many viewed as hate speech were directly and indirectly targeted towards persons known or perceived to be gay, lesbian, Jewish or Muslim, as well as others. This behavior is not what Eastern Michigan University professes in its institutional values, Campus Life Creed and Conduct policies.
The University will sponsor a tent outside Halle Library on Monday and Tuesday, October 20-21, 2008, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the same spot where the protesters convened. Our intent is both symbolic and educational in that the tent will include information and resources for faculty, staff and students about our commitment to diversity and the various programs through which we express it. Visitors also will have the opportunity to sign a banner about our University Creed (currently on display in the Student Center). Please stop by and encourage your students, colleagues and staff to do so, too. Refreshments will be available. …
I will participate in a Town Hall forum on Wednesday, October 22 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium. The focus of this forum, “Beyond Tolerance,” will allow us to engage in purposeful dialogue. Additional forums are in the planning stages and will include such topics as religious intolerance, freedom of speech and the role of the bystander. Provost Don Loppnow has convened a planning committee that will communicate with the campus community once these sessions are scheduled. Please encourage student participation.
The Tribune reports the traveling preachers group planned to next speak out in Detroit at Wayne State University.
