Former GOP presidential candidate Romney blames Michigan for its economic problems?

By Todd A. Heywood | 10.13.08 | 10:44 pm

In the latest twist of odd responses to the economic crisis in Michigan, onetime GOP presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney reportedly told a media gaggle in Zeeland last week that Michigan needed to blame itself for its economic conditions.

The Holland Sentinel reports Romney as saying: “Other states have been attracting employers, even auto employers. Michigan needs to stop blaming Washington and blame themselves.”

The Obama camp was quick to slam back, with Brent Colburn, Michigan spokesman for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, releasing the following statement:

“The last thing we need is a top McCain adviser laying the blame for the financial crisis at the feet of Michigan workers while continuing to promote the same disastrous policies that have cost millions of jobs in Michigan and around the country. Barack Obama is committed to making the changes we need to get our economy headed in the right direction, while the McCain campaign has again shown that it is out of touch, off base, and out of line. There is simply no excuse for pointing fingers at the very people who have suffered under the failed Bush economic policies of the last eight years, policies that John McCain has consistently embraced.”
